Boots creates a real life ‘Dragon’s Den in Swansea’
Boots The Chemists today unveiled the Boots Centre for Innovation at the University of Swansea which was described by Sir Nigel Rudd, Chairman of Alliance Boots as a “a real Dragon’s Den, in appropriately, the land of the dragon”.
The Centre sees a partnership between Boots The Chemists, the Institute of Life Sciences at Swansea University and Longbow Capital. Funding for the Centre has also been provided by the Welsh Assembly.
In launching the centre Sir Nigel Rudd said:
“I am delighted to be launching the Centre for Innovation which we hope will help put Swansea on the international map as a power house in product development."
“This idea of having ideas, expertise and financial backing in one place has been made famous recently by the show the Dragon’s Den, I like to think that here with the Boots Centre for Innovation we have created a real Dragon’s Den, in appropriately, the land of the dragon.
“It is especially encouraging that Boots will be working in partnership with the Institute of Life Science; a fruitful source of innovation, the Welsh Assembly, who have embraced the opportunity like good Government should, and with Longbow Capital, who are actively looking to create the businesses and business people of tomorrow.
“The Centre can contribute to both Boots and the broader economy. The opportunities for the products that come out of this hotbed are vast. Not only do they have the potential to be seen in over 2,400 stores in the UK but with our international wholesale and retail operations they they could become world wide household names.
“This is not a case of idle dreaming. Boots has a strong record of product innovation. One of the examples of this is ibuprofen, this product is now a household name in pain relief and was developed by Boots people in Nottingham. We have now identified what we believe are the top 10 current consumer demands for Boots products and we will base our search for ideas and development in the Centre on these.
“ We will now start work on attracting medical researchers and entrepreneurs to our new Centre from around the world. Today is a proud day for everyone involved in getting this project off the ground. With such positive momentum it heralds the start of a great opportunity for Boots, for entrepreneurs everywhere and for Wales.”
