With demand for greener, more sustainable alternatives to traditional oil-based materials our Botanics range addresses concerns for the environment while delivering the reliably high performance consumers expect from Boots.

Using newly discovered plant-derived ingredients is the cornerstone of Botanics’ success and it has become our flagship for delivering quality that has minimal impact on the environment.

We embarked on a collaborative project with support from DEFRA and brought together key experts including two leading universities to optimise the production and extraction of UV-protecting molecules and polysaccharides from the roots of marsh mallow. New extraction technology developed at Leeds University, and hydroponic growing conditions identified by our partners at environmental consultancy ADAS allowed us to deliver a unique extract with optimised performance, improved consistency and purity. 

Further testing of the marsh mallow extract by The Royal Botanic Gardens and The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry confirmed its potential for both skincare and healthcare applications. This impressively effective  extract has been formulated into a number of Botanics products since 2008 to both soothe and protect sensitive skin.
